With outspoken and colourful designs for wallpaper and fabrics, we would like to make your world more beautiful. At Eijffinger this has been our goal for over 145 years. In all these years, our curiosity, creativity and desire for innovation have remained unchanged. We are always interested in the latest decorating trends, the latest colour, designs and material innovations. But our interests go beyond the basic fashion trends. Changes in the world influence the perceptions we have of our personal environment. What is important to us? What motivates us? Where are we headed? And above all: how can we translate that to our home interior?

We live in a time of rapid and constant change. The speed of change has people reassessing and re-evaluating many aspects of their lives. Influences as diverse as the economic outlook and climate change have people reconsidering how they interact and live together in our community. Uncertainty creates the opportunity to look at things in new and different ways.

To cope successfully with this constant level of change and insecurity, people strive to be better informed and are often more critical. They look for brands that express their own unique identity, honestly and consistently. The brand needs to live up to its name so that those that identify with the brand, can rely on it as a reflection of their own personal style.

Decorating the world in distinct styles is our daily job at Eijffinger. At our home base in the Netherlands our designs pass through all the divisions before they leave our warehouse to be sent all over the world. Our representatives personify our brand and express and carry out our vision.

 

Anna Eijffinger

In 1875 Anna Eijffinger and her husband Theo opened a wallpaper store across the street from the Royal Palace Noordeinde in The Hague. It was a time with an increasing interest in interior decorating, especially amongst wealthy people.

Anna possessed a strong business instinct and worked behind the scenes directing the firm. At the time, it was extremely unusual to find a woman conducting a business. This sign of women’s liberation formed the basis of the eccentric and innovating vision that characterised the brand Eijffinger from the very start.

Eijffinger started out selling both decorative embroidery and wallpaper but the demand for wallpaper turned out to be the largest. It was a popular way to brighten up walls; the use of coal and peat fires made it necessary to replace wallpaper on a yearly basis. Within less than a year after starting their business the Eijffingers turned to wallpaper exclusively.

In the following years, Eijffinger shifted from a craft retail trader to a wholesale business. The first hundred years the business focused almost exclusively on wall decoration and when the economy flourished, the focus was primarily on the luxury end of the market. During the last forty years, curtaining also became part of the collection. Today an entire team is focused on the success of Eijffinger, at our home base and in many countries throughout the world. The collections are developed in our own design studio to be sold all over the world.

Our history

Anna and Theo Eijffinger open their first store in decorative embroidery and wallpaper across the street from Royal Palace Noordeinde in The Hague.

Eijffinger starts focusing on the wealthy clientele of The Hague. The business flourishes so they move to a more spacious property in the most popular shopping street of that time, Hoog Westeinde.
Under the direction of Government Architect Teeuwisse the ‘wallpaper palace’ is built at Plaats 13 in The Hague. The new building is a visible statement of Eijffinger’s exclusiveness.

Eijffinger celebrates 50 years with a grand party, looking back at the success of the past decades.
Eijffinger decides to eliminate its retail business and focuses on the wholesale business. Due to the threat of World War II importing products was almost impossible.

After the liberation, Eijffinger supplies wallpaper imported from the UK for the postwar reconstruction of houses. This wallpaper was all basic variations of white, with no design.
The company has recovered from the economic crisis and the war very quickly. They return to prints and introduce curtaining. A period of strong growth follows for Eijffinger.

Because the availability of strong collections abroad fades, Eijffinger starts to create its own designs and exports them with great success.
Eijffinger celebrates its 125th anniversary. Their trendsetting theme collections and innovative digital printing techniques are conquering the world.
